We’ve been upgrading some of the entertainment technology in our house, which freed up a TV, a VCR and a DVD player, so they were all listed on TradeMe this week and sold quickly. The house is now a little tidier and I have a few extra dollars to put towards the new Sony RDRHX910 DVD/HD recorder now gracing the lounge.

Over the next few weeks I want to really have a good clean up, so I’m developing four piles of stuff: TradeMe will see anything I think I can sell, the rubbish and recycling bins will see stuff that’s not much good for anything, the Salvation Army will get some goods and some items will go into our storage locker.

TradeMe makes it phenomenally easy to buy and sell items. It’s amazing what people will buy — even broken old cellphones — earlier this year I sold one which had been through the wash and another which plain old wasn’t working. I describe items I sell as accurately and honestly as possible, so the buyers knew what they were getting. I find the hardest part really is coming up with the description — checking model numbers and specifications, arranging a photo, gathering up the assorted bits and pieces such as a manual or CDs to go with computer peripherals, or original packaging where I’ve kept that, as I often do.

I recently upgraded to an iPod Video, so after Christmas the old 3rd generation 30Gb iPod will be going up for auction (unless I get private offers first). I need to take my data off it (I was using it for some backups) and gather its various cables and other related accessories together and polish off the fingerprints, then it’ll be all go.
