Between organised tours on the Big Island I spent one day hanging out in Kailua Kona. After a lazy morning I drove along the waterfront, ending up at Kahalu’u Bay, once a sacred and life-giving place, now a popular destination for snorkelling, surfing and lying on the beach.
I ate an ice cream and watched life go by for a few minutes, then I walked around the rocks at the south end of the bay. Partly I was wondering what another visitor was watching so intently in the water.
I was soon rewarded by the sight of a swarm of fish in a small pool, but then, on looking more closely, I realised the other woman was watching a pair of green turtles, or honu, feeding amongst the rocks.
It must be hard eating dinner while the tide keeps swirling around, washing you to and fro.
The turtles were quite big — perhaps two or three feet long. They didn’t come up on shore, unfortunately, but I was able to make a couple of photos while they were in the water.
