It was late afternoon when I heard a chittering in the neighbour’s tree. I looked up to see a brightly coloured bird. After dashing inside to fetch the camera I grabbed a quick shot before the bird flew away. It turned out to be an Eastern Rosella.
The neighbour saw me looking around for the bird after it flew away and told me it has been around for days now eating the apples on his tree. He also said it doesn’t scare too easily and I should be able to get closer next time I see it.
This shot’s a little soft in its focus; I’ll try for a better one if I can spot the bird again.
Update: New Zealand Birds tells us:
The most compelling question regarding the eastern rosella, especially in light of arguments regarding the status of introduced birds and whether or not they should be exterminated, is whether these birds are simply filling a niche which our endemic kakariki have vacated or whether they have accelerated the kakariki’s decline.

I saw two of these same birds just last week in Birkenhead on Auckland’s North Shore, but they were too far away for me to photograph.
