When I first heard about the Australian mockumentary Kenny I wasn’t terribly impressed and decided it wasn’t for me. Zap forward a couple of years, though, put it on TV, set me in a mood for watching a bit of telly, and I relented. I’m so glad I did.
There’s something about Australian films — I’ve very much enjoyed almost every Australian film I’ve ever seen: The Oyster Farmer, Muriel’s Wedding, The Castle, Heat Wave, Strictly Ballroom — there are loads of them.
That’s quite a contrast to New Zealand films, where I’ve disliked many many more than I’ve enjoyed. The Piano was very powerful, but not exactly enjoyable. Vigil stays in my memory as my all-time pet hate. Though actually ‘hate’ is too friendly a word for my feelings.
I did enjoy Whale Rider though…
But back to Kenny. It was a hoot.
Kenny, the lead character is a dinkum Aussie bloke — the nice kind — who takes pride in his job and tries to do right by his son. He’s honest; he’s genuine; he does no harm, even when sorely tried. He sorts out disputes between the workers in his team, and takes everything in his stride.
His job is to deliver, install and maintain portable toilets, portaloos. He talks a lot about toilets, and excrement. In plain language. Colourfully. Hilariously.
Really, if you have a chance to watch this movie give it a chance. I’m not one for ‘toilet humour’; this was more down-to-earth humour.
Oh, and my favourite quote: Kenny (divorced) advising a workmate who’s not sure about whether or not he should get married: Cut out the middle man; find someone you hate and buy them a house.
