The other day in Christchurch I was lucky enough to visit the Rita Angus exhibition at the Art Gallery.
Rita Angus (1908-70) is one of New Zealand’s most significant artists. A pioneer of modern painting in this country, she created some of our most memorable and best-loved images.

Astonishingly enough, entrance to see these 140 works was free of charge. The gallery was spacious, and with not too many other visitors, it was easy to see and enjoy the works.
I discovered I had several favourites amongst her paintings, including the main image in the screenshot attached to this post: Boats, Island Bay, 1962-63.
I’m no art critic, and not in a position to describe the paintings, but they represented many different styles. Clearly Rita Angus took risks and experimented in her art.
It was a great pleasure to view these paintings. I’m glad I had time to see them, since I missed out while I was in Wellington.
