Yesterday I noticed a small flock of Silvereyes feeding on some bread I’d thrown out. I set up my camera on a tripod indoors and tried my luck with some photos.
Silvereyes, also known as Waxeyes and Tauhou are pretty common, but they’re very small and fast. It makes taking photos quite a challenge.
Out of a dozen photos I took — several of the space where a Silvereye had been moments before the shutter released — only one was any good at all. I’ve attached it to this Post.
According to Andrew Crowe, in Which New Zealand Bird? the Silvereye is around 12 cm and 13 grams. By comparison, a Sparrow is 14 cm and 30 grams.
Silvereyes are especially cute. I caught this one looking all fluffy. When they turn their heads so their beak is pointing straight at you their dark little white-ringed eyes are very close-set.
