Wellington and the perpetual storm

by Miraz on 25 May 2009 · 1 comment

It seems as though we’ve had gales and rain pretty much non-stop for the last month. Watch a video of some of the worst of it.

It seems as though the whole of May in Wellington has been taken up with gales, rain and cold. About once a week we get a dry day, maybe with sunshine. Then the gales start up again.

The wind is the worst I find. The constant noise, the buffeting — it becomes very tiring. And of course in the worst of it you can’t sleep at night.

Last weekend it became quite fierce, but at least one brave soul ventured out with a video camera, and produced this Storm in slow motion on Vimeo:

Montage of slow motion scenes filmed around the south coast of Wellington, New Zealand during a wild storm on the 23rd of May, 2009.

Waves up to 14 metres and winds over 60 knots made for some pretty amazing clips including surfers at some of the more sheltered eastern bays and waves breaking over vehicles.

Watch out at around 00:25 for the huge wave in Houghton Bay. Also watch for the mad surfers.
