Wind and harbour meet figure on the edge

I was walking back from a Webstock meeting the other day when I spotted something odd: a figure was standing, rather precariously, on the low barrier at the edge of the promenade outside Te Papa. It looked as though someone was about to step off into the harbour. As I drew closer I could see [...]

Green Islands sculptures perfectly placed

Some new sculptures have appeared near Te Papa recently. I love the Green Islands series of 4 plinths supporting number 8 wire representations of native plants: On top of the plinth closest to Circa Theatre is a healthy head of toetoe (Cortaderia richardii) complete with plumes. The next plinth sports a large Pohutukawa (Metrosideros – [...]

Morepork and more at the Sanctuary

On a recent hot and sunny day my friend Anne and I spent some 4 hours walking at the Karori Sanctuary. It was cool under the trees, and there were not many people on the tracks we chose. We had plenty of opportunity to take our time, look and listen, and it paid off. At [...]

Earlier this week Conservation scientists spent five days on remote Takapourewa in the Marlborough Sounds catching the tuatara. Then today the tuatara, with an entourage of carers, flew across Cook [...]

An afternoon at Te Horo

Te Horo’s about an hour’s drive north of Wellington. That’s where we and the dogs spent Saturday afternoon, with friends, celebrating a dog’s birthday. With 8 people and seven dogs, sunshine, and excellent food, it was a really enjoyable afternoon. Our two dogs were the biggest of the bunch. That’s a nice change from them [...]

Olive, the matriarch

Olive’s the matriarch in our house. She’s a dark brown cat, now about 8 or 9 years old. Olive first came to live with us when our neighbours headed overseas for a prolonged stay. She was about 3 years old then. That first night we kept her in the kitchen. She must have been terrified, [...]

Finally, a Sasha photo

Our dog Sasha is very hard to take photos of. Generally she comes out as a puddle of black looking like a floor mop. The other day though the we sent off two scruffians to the groomer’s (photos in the album this photo’s drawn from), and got back two gorgeous little cuties. Of course I [...]

Plum blossom

The plum tree in the back garden’s a delight this week. It’s in full blossom, and has been for days now. This is slightly unusual because, after all, this is windy Wellington, where blossoms and leaves don’t generally last long. What’s more, it’s only early September — nominally spring (and in fact spring), but we [...]

Ship, hills, snow

The day started out cold. The Rimutakas were snow-capped this morning. When we went down to the waterfront for coffee there was a big ship in the harbour — probably waiting to collect a load of logs. It was an appealing scene.
